Enjoy a unique overnight stay on the sacred summit of Maunga Hikurangi, where you'll experience the tranquillity of the maunga and the opportunity to witness one of the world's first sunrises.
The Maunga Hikurangi Hut is a simple, shared backcountry hut designed to provide basic shelter for overnight visitors. Facilities are intentionally minimal, allowing guests to experience the maunga in a respectful and authentic way.
Hut Facilities
- 10 communal mattresses
- A small selection of pots, pans and cutlery
- Rainwater collection tank (water levels may be low or unavailable during summer)
- Fireplace (winter use only – not permitted during summer due to fire risk)
- Long-drop toilet (please bring your own toilet paper)
What to Bring
As this is a self-catered hut, guests are responsible for bringing everything needed for a safe and comfortable stay, including:
- Sleeping bag and pillow
- Food and drinking water
- Cooking equipment if required
- Warm clothing suitable for changing alpine conditions
- Waterproof rain jacket
- Sturdy walking footwear
- Hat and other sun protection
- Torch or headlamp
- Personal toiletries and any required medication
Free parking is available at the base of Maunga Hikurangi.

Maunga Hikurangi is a place of deep cultural significance to Ngāti Porou. Visitors are expected to respect the tikanga of the maunga and help preserve this special environment by following all hut rules.

- No camping
- No outside fires
- No drugs or alcohol
- No mountain bikes
- No unauthorised vehicles
- Remove all rubbish, food scraps and personal belongings when you leave
