Journey to sacred Maunga Hikurangi, regarded by Ngāti Porou (tribe/iwi) as the first place on Earth to greet the rising sun.
This exclusive iwi-led experience takes you deep into the heart of the New Zealand East Coast, far from the crowds and onto a mountain few people ever have the opportunity to visit. Guided by the Ngāti Porou tribe, you'll journey up the mountain in our rugged all-terrain vehicle, climbing through remote high-country landscapes to reach the sacred site of the nine pou (Māori carvings).
As the sun rises over Te Tairāwhiti, enjoy a light breakfast while taking in spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Here, you'll engage in Māori rituals and hear the stories of the nine monumental carvings that tell the story of Māui and his legendary adventures.
More than a sunrise tour, this is an authentic cultural experience that offers a rare insight into the history, traditions and way of life of the Ngāti Porou people. As the mountain's traditional guardians, our guides share stories and knowledge that can only be told by those who belong to this place.
If you're looking for an experience that is meaningful, off the beaten track and unlike anything else in Aotearoa, Maunga Hikurangi is well worth the journey.
