Your destination is Te Takapau a Māui, a sacred site on Maunga Hikurangi and home to the iconic nine carved pou. Standing proudly against a spectacular mountain backdrop, these monumental carvings tell the story of Māui and his legendary feats, stories that remain an important part of Ngāti Porou identity today.

As you explore the site, your guide will share the history of our people, from the ancient stories of Māui to the arrival of our ancestors and the enduring connection between Ngāti Porou and this landscape. Through storytelling and cultural interpretation, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the people, places and traditions that make this region unique.
